For each fern listed on this page, there is a link to Plants of the World Online, NC Vascular Plants, iNaturalist, NC State Plant Toolbox, NC Botanical Gardens Flora of the Southeastern United States, and Wikipedia. As you will see, not all sources agree on which names are accepted names vs. synonyms. The Classification System used below is from the Kew Royal Botanical Garden / Plants of the World Online. Plants of the World Online provides a reference for the accepted name and a list of homotypic and heterotypic synonyms.
Kingdom: Plantae (plants)
Phylum: Streptophyta
This phylum includes the charophyte green algae found in fresh water and all land plants. Species in this phylum all reproduce sexually by conjugation.
Class: Equisetopsida (spore-bearing vascular plants)
This class includes primitive spore-bearing vascular plants. In this class are horsetails, whisk ferns and ferns. Many species in this class are extinct and are only known by fossil records dating back to the Devonian Period.
For those interested in growing ferns from spores, we are developing a monthly calendar showing when to collect spores from ferns in partnership with the NC Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill (zone 8a). It is a work in progress.
At the bottom of this page is a photo gallery of some the common NC native ferns. Many of these photos came from iNaturalist. By joining and uploading photos to iNaturalist, you contribute to research on phenology, the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena, which is being used to study climate change.
Another useful reference that I have found is Emily Sessa's comprehensive Field Guide to Ferns, Spikemosses, Clubmosses, and Quillworts of Eastern North America, copyright 2024, Princeton University Press. If you have a copy of this field guide, I provided page numbers for each fern below.
