Walmer Woodlands began as a retirement hobby in January 2023. Living in a hardwood forest, I began purchasing and propagating shade-loving plants to create understory gardens for my wife and I to enjoy. As a life-long student, I have enjoyed learning how understory plants compete and reproduce in the competitive environment of the forest floor. Interestingly, some of the first plants to evolve on land (algae, mosses, ferns, etc.), have been among the most successful at adapting to change as the earth cycled through a number of mass extinction events. This is most interesting as we are entering another phase of global warming and another likely mass extinction event. Ferns have weathered at least 4 such events, while this is the first for homo sapiens.

To help me kindle this new passion for understanding the world of shade-tolerant plants, I have been fortunate to find mentors at NC State (volunteering on the plant toolbox data team with Scott Zona), the Master Gardener Volunteer program in Orange County, NC (volunteering with Mart Bumgarner and colleagues in Hillsborough), the NC Botanical Garden (volunteering wit Matt Gocke to start a fern spore propagation program) and joining a host of societies (American Fern Society, NC Native Plant Society, and the Hardy Fern Foundation. Brian Aikins manages the spore exchange at the American Fern Society, and he has been a wealth of information.
Through this website, I am sharing insights that I am learning from these mentors.

What you see in this website reflects my interest in exploring how the world around us provides clues about our place in the universe. Life is about relationships. I am a kinder-gardener who is loving the opportunity to transition from a professional career of building families together through in vitro fertilization, etc. to learning how to propagate plants and use them to create a beautiful environment for my wife and I to enjoy as we age together.
I look forward to the new relationships that will develop if and when our paths cross. You can reach me at dkwalmer@gmail.com.

Walmer Woodlands became a vendor for the NC Botanical Gardens in 2024. We delivered our first ferns grown from spore to Matt Gocke, the greenhouse and nursery manager on Tuesday 9/3/2024. The delivery included 42 Homalosorus pycnocarpos (Glade ferns) and 42 Woodsia obtusa (Blunt lobed wood fern). Both are NC natives and this is the first time that Woodsia obtusa will be available for sale at this garden. We are mutually excited about the relationship.
On 1/8/2025, delivered 24 Woodsia obtusa (Blunt lobed wood fern) & 5 Dryopteris marginalis (Marginal Shield fern).
